In only a few years, web developers have become famous. Thanks to the transition to the digital economy, their skills are mandatory, and they have become an important sector in the job market. But, behind the industries growth, there stands technical issues. A recent study tempers the economic effects and illustrates the profession’s failings. What is the solution to these issues? Focus.
“Bad” code can be expensive for companies
Last September, a company named Stripe, in collaboration with Harris Poll and several « C-level Executives » (presidents of big companies), published a study about web development as a profession. More than 1000 developers et 1000 managers, from United-States, France, United-Kingdom, Germany and Singapore have responded to the study’s poll.
The first observation is that civil society’s digitalisation makes web development necessary. In 2018, web developers numbered 18 million workers worldwide and, according to Stripe, have generated USD 918 billion revenues (EUR 800 billion) GDP in one year, or USD 51 0000 (EUR 44 500) per person per year.

Nonetheless, web development is not limited to software conception. According to Stripe, on average, 17 hours of each 41 hour working week is used to maintain code (failure correction, bug fixing and code modifications). It means an efficiency and opportunities loss rated at 30%, representing USD 85 billion.
A solution could be the following: establish a clear long-term strategy embracing developers’ teams throughout projects. Indeed, 36% think their missions are too focused on short term aims and that their managers do not have the technical knowledge to prioritize IT specifications throughout the project’s development.

The main advantage here is the search for efficiency, meaning the software’s ability to use a minimum of computation power to be operational. This approach put the development stage first, focusing on how the software is coded, which limits failing or « bad code » issues.
In 2017, the Alliance Green IT rating indicated that 30% of French companies integrated software’s eco conception into their digital strategy (vs 12% in 2015). One hopes that these practices will become mainstream to optimize developer work, to increase company’s business and to accelerate green IT growing!
